In hospitality, we often talk about the importance of communication. Whether welcoming guests, managing teams, or working across cultures, success depends on our ability to connect with others. Recently, students from SHMS Leysin and Les Roches discovered that one of the most effective ways to do exactly that is through sport.

Our friendly football match against Les Roches brought together students from different campuses, backgrounds, and experiences for an afternoon of competition, teamwork, and camaraderie. While the two schools may have represented different teams on the pitch, the event highlighted something that transcends institutions: sport is a universal language.
No matter where someone comes from or what language they speak, the values of teamwork, determination, respect, and sportsmanship are understood by everyone. A well-timed pass, a word of encouragement, or a shared celebration after a goal can communicate more than words ever could.
These are the same qualities that define successful hospitality professionals. The industry is inherently international, bringing together colleagues and guests from every corner of the world. Learning to collaborate with people from different cultures is essential, and events like this provide an opportunity to build those skills in a fun and engaging environment.
The match was about far more than the final score. It was an opportunity to create new friendships, strengthen connections between future hospitality leaders, and celebrate the diversity that makes our industry so dynamic.
Because when people come together through sport, they quickly discover that they already speak the same language.
